District General Information

The Cape Breton District Health Authority provides acute care, continuing care, programs and services through its hospitals, clinics and continuing care facilities within Cape Breton County, Northern and Central Inverness County and Victoria County.

In addition to acute care delivery the District works under an integrated shared service model with the Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority that includes Addiction Services and Public Health Services.

The District has a dedicated staff of about 3,300 health care providers who work with 270 hospital and community based physicians to provide primary, secondary and tertiary care to about 130,000 people.  Each year the District has more than 15,000 patient admissions, more than 125,000 Emergency Room visits and approximately 24,000 Ambulatory Care Visits. There are also nearly 20,000 OR procedures-day surgery and inpatient-performed each year in the District. In total, the District has 466 Acute Care beds and 207 Veteran and Continuing care beds.
